On 3rd may 2017, Railway ministry has announced that the world's highest railway bridge will be built over the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir in around two years from now.
The bridge will connect bakkal (Katra) and kauri (Srinagar). The distance of this bridge is stated as 1.315 km. For construction, 24,000 tonnes of steel will be required for rising above the river bed.
Further the steel which will be used will be made of 63mm thick special blast proof. Since Jammu and Kashmir is prone to frequent terror attacks.
The bridge will be constructed in such a way to withstand wind speeds up to 260kmph. If the wind speeds exceeds above 90kmph, the sensors on the bridge will sense the velocity of wind and send it to the signal, which will turn red to prevent train movement.
Once the construction of bridge is completed, it will break the record of 275 metre tall shuibai railway bridge in China.
The bridge is being constructed at a cost of 1,100 crores.
The bridge is slated to be completed by 2019.
